Cavatappi Pasta with Sausage, Tomatoes and Cream

by Michelle on April 7, 2010

Do you like to use fun shaped pasta? I do which is exactly why I bought a bag of Cavatappi Pasta. Who can resist those cute shapes? Don’t you love it!

We thoroughly enjoy pasta any way, shape or form and could easily eat pasta several times a week but we don’t. My husband is diabetic so I do have to watch the carbohydrates and sugars so maybe we’ll have pasta once a month. And I always make his portion with Whole Wheat pasta which is a bit better for him.

I found the Pasta with Sausage, Tomatoes and Cream on a cooking forum years ago and I believe it is my favorite pasta to date. I do make it with my Homemade Sausage but you can use any brand of Sweet Italian Sausage.

Pasta with Sausage, Tomatoes and Cream

2 TBL Olive Oil
1 LB Sweet Italian Sausage sweet
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper (I use 1/4 tsp Hot Hungarian Paprika)
4-5 Green Onions, diced
3 Cloves Garlic, minced
1 28-ounce can Italian diced tomatoes
1 1/2 c whipping cream (I use light cream)
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 lb shaped pasta
3 TBL fresh minced Basil

Topping: Freshly grated Parmesan cheese and sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley

Heat oil in large heavy skillet over medium heat. Remove casings from sausage, crumble and cook in oil with crushed pepper until sausage is no longer pink, about 7 minutes.

Add onion and garlic and cook another 5-7 minutes until tender. Drain tomatoes, chop coarsely and stir into sausage along with cream, salt and basil. Simmer until mixture thickens slightly, about 4 minutes.

In a separate pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta al dente. Drain pasta and add to simmering sauce. Garnish with Parmesan and parsley.

Enjoy!

  • Allie and Pattie April 7, 2010 at 9:41 am

Michelle, this is one of those dishes that all Italian grandmas just “know” how to do- they’re born with it. Mine would sometimes even throw in some leftover veggie like spinach or broccoli. SO good!

I could eat pasta every day for the rest of my life and not get bored. I love this shape! Haven’t had it in a while since I haven’t found a whole wheat version but I may just have to give in and eat the white version after seeing this. It’s bringing back all kinds of food memories. Sausage and cream sounds like a delicious topping. I love this.

This looks absolutely delightful. Will give it a run soon, usually have it all on hand for those nights I say, “Michelle, what are you cooking for dinner tonight?” As I figure it is something I will want to cook, too! I love the shape of this pasta…will have to look for it. I have, I just counted, 14 different shapes of pasta in the pantry right now. I always buy things when I see them knowing I will use it for something. Your photo is just so enticing.

One of the things you learn right off in food service, espically in the catering wing of it, is that a large percentage of how something tastes, actually has to do with how the food is presented – how it looks to people.

That’s why when doing up a menu, you have to not only think about will the various menu items taste good together, but also will they look good together on a plate. Is everything going to be drab looking, or have you included some good color? Etc.

The shapes of objects also affect how people percieve something is going to taste.

So the combination of various colors and fun shapes make for much higher reviews of your food, before it even actually hits their taste buds.

    And after reading over this recipe, their taste buds would only be adding more positive points to the overall rating! :-}

As the ‘Colonel’ use to say, “I love it when a plan comes together” ;-p

This sounds really great Michele. Just printed it out for sometime soon. I made the cheesey cookie snack with the pepper jelly on Easter Sunday. Made them to set out for anyone that could not wait for dinner for a bite. Everyone liked them.

I LOVE cavatappi! I love how the grooves in it help hold on to the sauce. I’m one who likes a healthy dose of sauce with each noodle, so the fact that you are using this particular pasta tells me that I would love this pasta!

Pardon the change of subject: “The “right” pink house is out there somewhere. Not just any house in any location is pink worthy. You may have to call it “peach” or “salmon” or something.

  • Kim April 9, 2010 at 1:46 am

I love to try out all those pasta shapes too. Sausage and cream is one of my favorite ways to enjoy pasta too.
