Fresh Strawberry Salad with Macadamia Nuts and Almonds

by Michelle on February 5, 2011

Okay Mother Nature, you showed me your power but now it’s time for some thoughts of sunshine and warm summer days.

Luckily during our last blizzard I had a quart of fresh strawberries sitting in my refrigerator. As the winds were howling and our home was dancing to “Shake, Rattle and Roll” with every gust, I was happily in my kitchen hulling fresh strawberries and thinking about summer. I did make this salad a little different and added some Macadamia Nuts which was absolutely delicious!

Strawberry Basil Poppy Seed Dressing
Recipe developed by Big Black Dog

2-3 handfuls of whole fresh strawberries (In the winter strawberries are not as sweet so use 3 handfuls)
2/3 cup EVOO (extra virgin olive oil)
1 TBL lemon juice
1 tsp honey (add more if you’d like it sweeter)
6-8 fresh Basil leaves
1 TBL poppy seeds
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Put everything sans salt in a food processor and blend until creamy. Taste if and if it needs a little salt add a shake. Keep refrigerated.

I usually serve this over fresh a spinach and romaine lettuce salad topped with toasted sliced almonds and sliced fresh strawberries. If you have some Macadamia Nuts, add them as well.

Whitening your Teeth with Strawberries

According to “World Dental” an on-line magazine and my own Dentist, Dr. Franciska Theodosis, strawberries will naturally whiten your teeth! Who knew?? Strawberries, not only taste incredible but each sweet berry contains Malic Acid which when combined with baking soda acts as an astringent and will remove surface discoloration, buffing away stains from wine, coffee and chocolate!

Directions: Clean and hull a large strawberry. Crush the strawberry to a pulp. Mix the strawberry pulp with about a 1/2 tsp of baking soda. Using a soft toothbrush or your index finger spread the mixture onto your teeth. Leave on for 5 minutes, then brush thoroughly with toothpaste to remove the berry–baking soda mix. Rinse.

I don’t mind the taste of baking soda but I know some people don’t like it. So I tried crushing a berry and mixing it with my toothpaste and I swear my teeth were whiter afterwards.

The salad looks great, I would not have thought to serve poppyseed dressing on it, but I bet that is very good. Love the strawberry/teeth whitening info. Who knew???

I wonder if just rubbing a strawberry onto the teeth would work too? It could be left on for a while. I will be trying this for sure. The coffee and wine are taking their toll on my teeth.
