Pucker up, Baby!

I’ve been searching for a “healthy” recipe to make for Giz’s Healthy Cooking Tested, Tried and True #2 for some time. But face it, I just don’t bake or cook much that is considered “healthy”. I love cream and butter and eggs and sugar and caffeine! I don’t have a cholesterol problem and no one in my family does so I load up my cooking and baking with lots of good…oh I mean bad stuff! 😉

I emailed Giz about a month ago and asked her if it was okay if I made a sorbet and she said she thought it would be just dandy! It was fun to make the sorbet and so easy. I made this for Mr. Tastebuds so it is a bit on the tart side and he will love it!

Power Pucker Kiwi Sorbet
Recipe developed in the kitchen of BigBlackDog

3 fresh Kiwi fruit, peeled
3/4 cup sugar **See Note
Juice of 1 large lemon
Zest of 1 lemon
Garnish with fruit of your choice (I used fresh strawberries)

Put all ingredients in your food processor. Process until smooth and sugar is completely dissolved. Pour into a covered freezer container and place in your freezer.

Because of the amount of fruit in my sorbet it really never became hard frozen and I had it in the freezer for over 2 days. When I was ready to serve I just scooped it out and it was fine.

Note: I used a well-rounded 1/2 c. Splenda Sugar Blend (boy is that stuff expensive…WOW). The sorbet is still very tart so you may want to add more sweetener to taste.

Update….Update….Update!

Mr. Tastebuds, aka Joe, said my Pucker-Up Sorbet was “very good”. I have never and I mean never received anything but “okay” or “tasty” before. WOW…the sorbet must have been over-the-top good!

    It’s so colourful Michelle and I love things that are tart. Maybe the sweetener inhibited the freezing process – Thanks for your submission – it’s a goody :)

    This is soooooo tart but Joe loved it and I knew he would. It was so easy…really a no fuss dessert.I made popsicles once with fresh strawberries and they did not freeze rock hard either. I have a brand new subzero frig so there’s no problem with my freezer. I think it’s the amount of fruit pulp v. water and I added no extra water to my recipe.

    That is so so summer pretty! I think sorbet should have some pucker. Sounds like a great healthy summer treat!

    Oh, I like this .. will have to try the Kiwi next time I make sorbet. BTW sorbet is mushy as opposed to ice cream, so this is just right!

    I absolutely love kiwi and I love your recipe because it doesn’t require the use of an ice cream maker (I still don’t have one). I will be trying this! Thanks for sharing.

    I have an ice cream maker, in fact I have 2 of them. I stopped using them as it’s too much bother and just freezing the ice cream, sorbet or sherbet in a covered container works just as well.

    I can see how that would be a power pucker sorbet. Have you tried using agave nectar as a sweetener?

    Oh it is definitely a power pucker but my husband loved it and I knew he would. Annie, I’ve not tried agave yet but it’s on my “ToTry” list. Thanks for the reminder!

    Have to agree with the comment about the whole not-having-an-ice cream maker thing. I keep meaning to get one (and it isn’t like they’re crazy $$$) but I see them and go… weeellll, it IS $30… I don’t really NEED one… so I never got one, which is a shame ’cause I have so many sorbets I want to make! Guess your recipe’s at the top of the list!! Thanks for a great summer snack.
